Introducing some videos about straight razors. How to use them, look after them, what straight razors to buy and straight razors to avoid.
Royal Enfield C5 Classic EFI for sale.
This is a motorcycle with a lot of charisma - a throwback from a bygone era. Its endearingly different to modern bikes, which can be a positive thing if you're looking for something different.
Warm to its character and you'll have a massive grin on your face as you thud gently around the back lanes.
Condition as you can see in the photos is quite impressive, very clean and well preserved and commands attention from other bikers wherever we go.
The Saddle has been replaced with a hand made, bespoke Tan Leather Saddle, "Bobber" style and is very comfortable, even on long distances.

You see plenty of videos on HOW to shave with a straight razor, right? This video shows how NOT to shave with a straight razor !!! How many times do you see "Cowboy" films and many action movies using a straight razor at a ridiculous angle of 90 degrees. The razors used at that angle are merely for spreading butter on your toast. The secret to successfully shaving with a straight razor is simpl...

Yep, you are correct, just about worn out. Still shaves though, incredible test of a great razor maker.
My brother
You have a bike similar to this one? 😉
Thanks for sharing. Great information.
Beautiful bike!
Yeah it is lovely. I have another Military Enfield but that is a keeper, definitely !!!!!
another one documentarical demonstration..
I'm 54, started shaving at about 14, maybe 15. Started with a Gillette G2, then a Mach 3, then every incarnation of a Gillette multi-blade system up to when they became stupidly expensive. Tried Wilkinson Sword's 3 blade affair in the m90s - went blunt after 2 or 3 shaves. been using Lidl's 4 blade system for about 10 years, because cheap and they work. Hate the plastic waste though. Asked my wife to get me a straight razor about 4 years ago. Got me a decent one. I've used it about 10 times, because of the technique evading me and I have heavy growth. Recently got a single blade disposable from Henson Shaving. Works great....but, I'm going to practice more with the straight razor after watching this.
Thats great to here and i am glad it has inspired you to continue with your straight razor. Practice on your neck first, then each side of the face and leave the chin area till you have got some practice, usually about 5 times and you will have it sussed. Stretch your skin with your facial muscle and your free hand and not too steep with the angle of the blade...thats it. Let me know how you are getting on please. You did right to ditch the plastic. Using your facial muscle will improve the jawline over time. If you have a leather strop with a canvas back, strop the razor on the canvas side 30 laps to wake up the blade, then 50 laps on the leather side prior to shaving. When you have finished shaving, strop the razor again 30 laps to get rid of any microscopic droplets of water. I will doing a video on stropping next time.
@@pixsellpix Excellent stuff. The razor came with a strop - also got one my dad gave me which came from a barber's that was closing near me (Wallasey) in the 80s.
@@octaviussludberry9016 Even better.Vintage strops are usually better than new ones, i have both and the old ones are the best.
Great video and very informative to the point! Cheers
Aimed at newbies to cut throat razors ( i hate that term "cut throat") some guys are really put off by thinking everything is negative about traditional wet shaving, especially if they have only used electric razors in the past and are trying out wet shaving for the first time. What if i cut myself? Well so what if you cut yourself during a shave it's not the end of the world. You just learn from any mistakes and carry on improving your skills. So, keep it simple and learn your skills faster. I still nick myself occasionally and i have been shaving for 55 years, it happens sometimes and sometimes it can only be due to your skin being out of condition.
@@pixsellpix I agree with you 100%... the term cutthroat definitely might put some people off I don't even think that term was used because of people cutting their throats during the shave more so people using straight razors to commit crimes.
@@seanstapelfeld Cut throat razor originates from a fictional character Sweeney Todd, a Barber in the 1900's who used to stun some of his customers and finish them off by cutting their throats with his razor. From there, his accomplice (Mary Lovett) would then make meat pies from them.
LOL at 'like a chicken breast.' Get an alum block and styptic pencil for the inevitable nicks when you are learning. T
Yeah....i wasn't laughing at the time, this was 40 years ago and i had not got a clue. Ohhh yes of course styptic pencil, i forgot to mention that. I will amend the copy now while i think on. Cheers for your input, much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing Graham, seven day sets don’t come much better. Great to see them all restored and returned to service, very well done. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.
I agree my friend, i have restored quite a few 7 day sets over the last 10 years and this set has to be one of the best ones.😉
Great video Graham!
Cheers mate, have a great weekend. Very hot over here in Slovenia at the moment.
Glad to have found your channel my friend, this is awesome, i've seen 7 days sets but they can be expensive but I hope one day to have one. Happy saturday and happy shaving!
Hello there and thanks for your comments. I restored quite a few 7 day sets and most go to America. However, i don't actually own a 7 day set myself ironically and i am tempted to keep this set if it doesn't sell. 😉
Great shave, looks like they all are in great shape.
Absolutely, all precisely the same performance and buttery smooth as you expect from a quality razor maker as this. Wishing you a great weekend 👍
Nice shave Graham, really liking this set.
Yeah, me too!! Very consistent, buttery smooth, if the last three blades are the same as the previous blades, it will be a fine set indeed. Because they behaved so well during honing, i really don't think they have been used much at all. Pivot is still tight and the water disbursement during honing went all the way up to the spine. The blades actually sticking to the finishing stone under running water. 😉😊
Good to see you Graham, nice work on a high quality seven day set. Be well.
Cheers my friend and thanks for your comment. Very lovely set indeed. Ironically i don't have a seven day set in my collection and this may just be a "keeper" if it doesn't sell by my Birthday next month July. Very tempting as the blades are so buttery smooth. 😉
Beautiful set Graham and great shave
Hello there pegleg, how are you this lovely weekend? Yeah really lovely set this one...might be a "keeper" if it doesn't sell before my birthday in July...LOL!!!😉
I have just acquired a set in very nice condition with the blades apparently unused ( still traces of grease ) however a couple of the blades have a little light rust in a few spots , how would you recommend getting the rest of the blades ready for shaving and how would you re finish the two blades with a little rust ? I would be most grateful if you could list your process and Stones that you used to refresh your blades to shave ready … Any advice greatly appreciated .
Firstly, i would strop the blades after cleaning the grease off and just see if they are shave ready before you do any honing. With regards to the rust problem, i would drop them into a small tub of vinegar, add bicarb of soda and watch it bubble, then add some hot water and more vinegar as this will help to loosen the rust deposits. Any remaining rust i use 1,200 grit wet sandpaper to clean off any rust. When honing these small blades, it helps a lot if you place electrical tape over the spine, about 15/20mm overlap on each side of the blade. This will give you something to hold on to while honing.I use the pyramid technique for honing. For each stone, start with 50 laps, then 25 laps, then 12, 6, 3, then 10 individual laps with clear, clean water, no slurry. Repeat this on a 1,000 grit stone to set the bevel, then 4,000 grit, then on to 8,000 grit, 12,000 grit and finish on a 12/15,000 grit Imperia La Roccia is what i finish with. At the end of honing, run some water slowly over the 15,000 stone until the blade starts to stick to the stone. When the blade sticks to the stone, it is ready. Then strop 50 laps before AND AFTER shaving. Always important to strop immediately after shaving to keep the edge sharp and free from any residual water. Hope this helps, any questions please feel free to ask. As for stones, it is just personal choice, they all do the same thing. Thuringian stone is a good one and reasonable affordable. around 12,000 grit
@@pixsellpix Thank you for taking the time and trouble to pen such a detailed reply to my questions Graham , very much appreciated Sir 😊
@@DasScaramooch No worries, let me know how you get on with your project, it will be interesting to know the results.😉
Very nice shave!
Can this be used to shave the head???
In general, any razor can be used to shave the head. I recommend that you "follow" the razor with your free hand to feel the way along your scalp. There are dedicated razors for this job also gillettebaldly.com/the-shave-it-kit/ $45 is a bit on the steep side, but i guess you only buy it once.
Thank you so much for your response!!!

It's all about the feel when shaving your head. You can actually buy razors designed to do this job, they are curved. Trust me, you won't do a Van Gogh, you self preservation will make sure of that. Just gently, gently and feel your way around with you free hand, sort follow the blade with your free hand. You will feel where you have missed. Have a styptic pencil to hand as well.

Absolutely and do you know that when i got the first razor out of the case, it picked up my arm hairs without any stropping and all the razors followed suit. All the razors were exactly the same when honing, they all "stuck" to my finishing stone (La Roccia) under running water...brilliant result.
Those are a special find indeed, fabulous condition. Good tip on using the wife's towel to dry the blade and remember that any stubborn bits of soap scum come off easily with a gentle swipe of her toothbrush! T

Oh yes i agree with you about taking the blade out of the case to hone the edge. I always put a long piece of tape on the spine so i can grip the blade better and finish the blade on my ILR 12K stone.

That's a new make to me Graham, it's a very fine shaving tool. Nice video fella..
Hi!!!! New one on me too, never heard of this make, but it was obviously well made, details. Did a bit of research and this maker make some incredible blades. i have one too. i tried it but found null ..firtsly it should be honed perfectly..
Yes i agree, sometimes the blade needs to be refreshed on a progression of sharpening stones. The strop and stone in the case is just to maintain the edge. At sometime, the blade will have to be re-honed on a finishing stone.
I have a couple ERN, some of my favorites
Yeah they are built like a tank and all consistent, some with a Gold wash, scalloped spine or just plain like this one and they all perform exactly the same.
Very nice ERN, i have a similar razor called a Krupp which give a consistently good shave. Also very nice to see a one hand shave, i do the same as i just cant get used to holding the razor in my left hand. Thanks very much Andy
Morning Andy. Most German razors are good. I have had quite a few ERN Crown and Sword and all are consistently perfect shavers. Dovo was the worst blade i have come across. Brand new Dovo, straight out of the wrapper/box, had to be honed to be shave ready and pass the HHT.😉😊
@@pixsellpix absolutely agree, i had 2 Dovo razors new and had to be honed, really disopointing as it was years ago when i was new to straight razors.
@@andyc3943 Ohhhh thats not a good start to straights, especially from what should be a good maker by now. I have had Gold Dollar razors from china that are better than Dovo with their fancy Gold wash and Bismark, taking credit from "borrowed interest". I am a firm believer that vintage razors are the best. The reason for this is that these razor were made in a time when excellence was "standard" and some of mine are almost 200 years old, certainly outlived the previous owner and me also. HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO DO IT MY FRIENDs Do any Pucks or bar Soaps out there? You can mix and match old Soaps? to fit in any Mugs or Cups? Like (Mitchells' Wool Fat or Arko Sticks. Just to name a few of them ?) Cut the bar soap up on a paper plate, pour the soap, shavings and chunks from your plate into a mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, microwave your soap and cups or mugs? put your paper plate under your cup in case it bubbles out of your cup? for a minute or so? If it foams up, STOP. The water keeps it from burning itself up. (DON'T OVER WATER YOUR SOAP??) Easy, does it? Let cool don't want to Crack the Mugs or Cups you're using? (You just want it to Congeal in your Mug or Cup') it is very hot and watery'''''. let it cool in PLACE'. after it cools, put it in a Sunny Window, until the Soap hardens? When using your soaps, use Dry Brush Less Water. It thickens the soap, making it easier to use on your face. (You can use any Hard Soaps You like??) Save your Money, spend it on your wife, don't listen to the shave Mafia. It saves me time and Money in these Inflationary Times. Your mileage may vary? Wheelchair Larry Happy New Year
Good for you. I gotta tell you though….this seems like a hell of a lotta WORK. More than my sorry ass wants to take on.
if your Jay Leno you can disregard hi Jay thanks for your reply hugs wheelchair larry@@CraigRasmussen1
It looks like a folding machete
Oh yes, i remember this razor well. That spike point was completely lethal, especially around the ears. Quite rare now as i haven't seen one on the market for 5 years now.
Does the green one burn alot or jus a lil?
Does the green one burn?
No mate, no burns. It has a very gentle Eucalyptus Oil fragrance rather than a nasal spray type of menthol and is quite refreshing on a hot summer morning. Try it out, highly recommended, leaves you feeling fresh for the day ahead.😉
@pixsellpix Thank u! I'm gonna use it to shave my head. It delivers 2day but I'm leary bc the cremo cooling burned my head so I hope the proraso is not as strong as the cremo cooling
I am sure you will find it perfectly fine for your head or face@@SANSOOBOXER_OFFICIAL
Probably the best intro to straight razors I've seen, nice work!
Well i hope you are inspired to try the traditional way of shaving. It's not as bad as people make out, just the name "cut throat razor" puts the fear into some guys. All razors will nick at some time or other, you just have to understand to stretch the skin with your free hand and keep the skin flat...very simple really. Thanks for your comments and let me know how you get on with your shave routine with straights. 😎
Hello Graham, very interesting shave, I have a 42 in my collection, nice to see one being used. Best wishes Andy Llandudno.
Hi Andy and thanks for your comment. Great razors for getting under the nose with that slim blade. 😉
Thank you grandpa for your splendid video ❤ from 🇮🇳 india
Grandpa?😆
LMAO 'old and asthmatic'! i like those scales. Happy New Year! T
Oldham Athletic football ground. My Uncle took me one day in winter and it was just a field in the middle of nowhere, snowing and friggin freezin and they played like Grandma's, so after that i called them Oldham Asthmatic. Hated football from then on and i was only 10 years old. Yeah the scales are quite different aren't they?
Great video Graham
Alright pegleg. How are you doing at your end...Happy New Year or Srečno Novo Leto as they say in Slovenia. 🙊
@@pixsellpix all good, happy New Year to you too
What a beautiful piece of art this old school razor. I am in love with these blades forged from finest Sheffield steel at that time. This stuff is made to pass over to many generations of men. Great work Graham! Wish you for a long life on youtube.
Cheers mate. Made in a time when excellence was standard and lasts many lifetimes. Thanks for your input.😎👍
What a torture for the skin.
Torture, how does that work. Does my skin look tortured? Actually using a properly honed straight razor tones the skin and the facial muscles. What do you think barbers used before plastic alternatives? 😉 Have you ever shaved with a straight razor?
@@pixsellpix Actually I am not in favour of shaving. I was just imagining myself going through the process of shaving.
@@artsteps295 Well i only shave twice a week as my beard does not grow fast at all. Imagine for a second...not the shave...it's the preparation of the skin firstly. A professional barber will soften your beard with hot towels first, then apply some Oil, (i use Olive Oil), then apply the creamy shave soap enriched with Glycerine and other nutrients like Sandal wood Oil. After all this treatment to enrich your skin tone will the shave commence. Best policy when shaving with ANY razor is to stretch your skin with your spare hand. This will ensure the skin is flat and smooth for the blade. After shaving i use a good quality aftershave, then apply good quality face cream. After this pampering, you feel refreshed and confident.😎
Did Feather blades work and not the common DE blades?
From my experience with these razors, you will need to use the REDOX blades for best results...if you can find them that is.😉
i like after you said 'the Gentleman's Companion', the clock chimed. i thought bloody hell, Graham's into gunfighting now! Why would there have been a matching set? is it like the advice new SR shavers are given these days - one in use and one sent out for honing - or just cheaper than a 7 day set. i have an ILR and i need to revisit it having been on a coticule and black Arkansas binge lately! All the george and hope the winter there is kind. T
Noooo not gun fighting. A matched pair is convenient for most guys who only shave 2 or 3 times a week like myself. As you know, a SR needs 48 hours for the fin to go back down again, so having a matched pair fits that need perfectly. THATS the point. Have a lovely weekend
